TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS and visas (updated 24 Nov)

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS and visas (updated 24 Nov)

South Africa is open and it’s business as usual for film industry travellers and tourists from all countries. Read our walkthrough covering visas and COVID requirements.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS and visas

No quarantine is required unless you fail to produce a negative test or show symptoms on arrival – see below.

NEW COVID REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL TRAVELLERS

  • A certified, negative PCR Covid test, dated no more than 72 hours before departure.
  • Proof of accommodation.
  • Proof of travel insurance with proven cover for personal Covid expenses (medical expenses, quarantine etc).

ON ARRIVAL

  • All passengers will be screened upon arrival in South Africa. Provided you show no symptoms and have presented a negative PCR Covid test, then you will be permitted to proceed into arrivals. No quarantine required.
  • Anyone showing any possible Covid symptoms will be required to go into mandatory self-isolation (at their own accommodation) until they test negative. Moonlighting will assist you at all times in this.
  • All travellers must download the Covid App on arrival purely for any track and trace requirements. We will send you the details.

VISA REQUIREMENTS ARE THE SAME AS USUAL

Nationals of a visa-exempt country: if you are categorised as “Oversight” (this includes producers, directors, DPs, agency and clients), then you will need to present an Oversight Visa Authority letter to immigration upon arrival, as usual. No need to visit the Embassy. As your service company, we will provide this Letter of Authority for you.

Travellers from non-visa exempt countries and any crew categorised as “specialist” (including talent) will need to apply to their nearest South African Embassy in person for a visa, as before.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns or questions about any of the requirements. Beccy is your go-to person for this and she will walk you through every step of the process. Reach her at beccy@moonlighting.co.za

7 THINGS TO KNOW about shooting in South Africa in this new world

It’s Summer! Our borders are open for all business & film industry travellers,  our grass is green thanks to a wet winter and the exchange rate means 23% more production value than last year.

Working safely and efficiently: Our approach is to embrace and adapt to this new production environment, apply strict safety protocols, and leverage this changing world to find new efficiencies, giving you the best bang for your buck.

South Africa’s risk-adjusted strategy meant that we’ve moved from the world’s strictest lockdown in March to Level 1 and open borders in October, with support and approval from the WHO.

This has resulted in South Africa being a stable alternative to other production destinations that are struggling with second waves.

We’ve included links to 7 articles which sum up everything you need to know to shoot in South Africa this season, and plenty of good reasons to do so.

10 REASONS WHY South Africa is still the best production destination in the world

It would be hard to find a reason not to shoot your project in South Africa, even in today’s world. Rest assured, South Africa will look after you and justify your decision to come here 10 times over.

As a quick reminder (because we love to boast), here’s the full click-baity checklist:

  1. Range of locations: that can replicate almost anywhere in the world, within a 2-hour radius of a major city.
  2. Beautiful and green: after a long, rainy winter our lakes and dams are full and our meadows are green.
  3. Weather: we have a Southern hemisphere climate, with summer from November to March.
  4. Talent: we have a wide range of diverse talent and can negotiate cost-effective package deals.
  5. Crew: internationally recognised as world-class.
  6. Daylight: 14 – 16 hours a day in summer.
  7. Infrastructure & facilities: one of the reasons why we are one of the top tourist destinations in the world.
  8. Production Value: much more budgetary value than last season thanks to the exchange rate. For more info, read this article.
  9. COVID strategy: strictly adhered to and praised by the WHO. Read also about our safety protocols here
  10. Technology and connectivity: world class. Read about remote capability here..

In short, South Africa #reloaded and ready for your project.

SAFETY IS KEY: Pandemic-proof production protocols (updated 9 December)

SAFETY IS KEY: Pandemic-proof production protocols (updated 9 December)

You need to know that your production is a safe one. To put your minds at ease, here’s how we shoot responsibly.

Safety Protocols: The South African Commercial Producers Association (CPA) developed a strict set of Safety Protocols for production almost immediately after our initial nationwide lockdown. Film production within South Africa has been greenlit since May 2020 and our crew and teams are well-practised in working with the protocols.

Numbers: Production carries on as per (new) normal with a few changes. Numbers of crew / cast on set or at basecamp are limited according to the size of the location, as determined by our Covid Safety Officers. Where necessary, we use more basecamps and shuttle people accordingly to ensure adequate social distancing.

Safety Officers: We have official Covid Safety Officers on every set. They screen everyone on arrival and ensure that the protocols are strictly adhered to throughout the shoot.

Masks: masks must be worn by everyone at all times.

Pre-production: takes on significant importance to ensure everything is in place and in accordance with the safety protocols, especially when we’re shooting on location.

Costs: Some of our clients have asked us about extra costs associated with the safety protocols. These vary according to the size and logistics of the shoot. We are happy to share the details with you, so please reach out to shayne@moonlighting.co.za for more info.

Day to day life: Masks are mandatory for everyone when out in public, on set, in the office etc; everyone must sanitize their hands at the entrance to all shops, restaurants, public buildings etc. At Moonlighting, on arrival at he office, we ask you to wash your hands at the specially installed wash-basin by the front door and then we screen & log your temperature. Santizers are placed throughout the office.

Restaurants are open with tables positioned to allow social distancing. There is a general curfew between 12 midnight and 4am. This will not affect any shoot schedule as we will be able to get permits to waive this; you just need to be aware of it if you’re out in the evening.

We’ll keep you updated should any of these measures change.

THE EXCHANGE RATE ADVANTAGE: up to 23% cheaper than 2019 (updated 9 December)

There has to be a silver lining out there and production value is it. Better exchange rates can make up for lost budget.

The fairly dramatic fall in the value of the South African currency is probably one of the lesser advertised facts about the past 8 months. From an average of R16.20 to the Euro from October 2019 to March-end 2020, the Rand value dropped to R19.94 from the beginning of August 2020 to mid-October.  Since October it has fluctuated between R19 and R18.18 – representing up to 23,14% drop in value. In production budget terms, a key crew member costing 247 Euro per day last season will be available now for between 201 – 217 Euro per day.

The USD variation over the same period represents up to 15.3% saving.

On top of that, we are able to negotiate good hotel rates on your behalf as the South African tourism industry needs to fill its rooms.

Another budget-securing option is to lock in an exchange rate to safeguard against currency fluctuations. Please contact us if you‘d like more information on this.

REMOTE PRODUCTION and its unexpected benefits

REMOTE PRODUCTION and its unexpected benefits

Now that we’ve solved the key issues like bandwidth and comms, we think the additional benefits of remote production are here to stay.

Moonlighting pulled off South Africa’s first remote international TVC shoot in March when the client and agency team for an OPPO spot could not travel from China. Since then, we have run numerous tests with producer partners around the world and have identified and addressed all concerns and issues relevant to commercial shoots. These range from bandwidth acquisition in remote locations to multiple (and private) communication channels. There are solutions for every budget and every type of shoot.

How remote production can benefit your project:

  1. When members of your team can’t travel for a shoot, they can still have full, real-time participation.
  2. You can make significant budget savings by having some of your team join remotely.
  3. If any team members should be delayed or unexpectedly find themselves in quarantine, they can still join the shoot remotely, keeping your project on-schedule.
  4. Rather than watching every step of a long production process, clients can view high-res images at their desks and give input and approvals as needed.
  5. Remote participation doesn’t have to be expensive. The production setup can be tailored to the project and budget, ranging from a simple Zoom system, to high-red imagery and multiple cameras.
  6. Using remote technology, directors and agency can now join a casting session in realtime, making approvals and feedback much quicker.

ENABLING A SUCCESSFUL REMOTE PRODUCTION AND MINIMISING RISK

Working with professionals

We are fortunate to work alongside our sister company & technical provider, Helium. Their experience in sports broadcasting has professionalized remote production and provided us with a full remote broadcast studio on-site at the Moonlighting office.

Bandwidth

No bandwidth, no shoot. Our service provider has invested in every possible device to harvest mobile and satellite bandwidth, no matter the location. If there is data in an area, we will find it.

Communication

You need to be able to replicate the conversations that take place on a physical film set so that none of the key role players feel in any way compromised. We have been working with ClearComms and Motorola to allow a remote participant to join the shoot using a PPT app and accessing crew via the headsets used on set – a serious game-changer.

Confidence in the systems

We all know the frustration of arriving in a boardroom where the IT systems do not work or a conference call where one participant cannot connect.  In the remote broadcast world, there is always the concern that there is a break somewhere in the chain that can compromise the system.  We have at least 2 and usually 3 back-up systems at any one time – we test, test and test again. We have thorough pre-production processes and work with professional broadcast crew.

In short, we’ve got the experience and every tool in the box to make sure that your remote experience is seamless and world class.
