Why Sean Penn’s The Last Face filmed in South Africa

    9 May 2016

Great interview in the Hollywood Reporter with producer Bill Gerber – praise for South African crew, the South African tax incentives and for Moonlighting 🙂

Producer Bill Gerber reveals how the country’s versatile locales and movie production incentives made it the ideal location for the festival entry starring Charlize Theron.

‘The incentives [South Africa offers] are enticing — it’s very provocative. And we also got lucky in that the exchange rates kept improving in our favor the longer we stayed down there. We had a spectacular local production company called Moonlighting; we dealt with a woman named Genevieve Hofmeyr [who also helped with on-location shooting for Mad Max: Fury Road], and she just did an extraordinary job of lining up crew in all the departments, other than the key [crewmembers] whom we brought with us. They’re very prolific down there and just great.’

Hollywood “blown away” by SA production crews

    24 February 2016

Hollywood “blown away” by SA production crews – written by Francesca Fazey / Cape Business News

South Africa’s international reputation for excellence in the film industry is fast extending beyond its scenic locations to now include the quality of its production crews. This is according to Chris Brancato, Executive Producer of “Of Kings and Prophets,” the first big-budget television series from American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Studios to be shot entirely in South Africa.

Brancato was speaking at a press conference on Thursday on the series set, located in Stellenbosch. “I have worked on film sets all over the world, and can honestly say that this is one of the best crews I have ever worked with,” Brancato said.

He described the attention to detail in every level of the production as “jaw-dropping.” Brancato also praised the work ethic and depth of talent available in the country and said he had received several unsolicited comments from seasoned Hollywood directors involved in the show who were “blown away” by the quality of the South African production team.  The ethnic diversity of the crew in senior positions and “not just as assistants”, was another strong feature that was rare in the industry, Brancato said.

Avengers Age of Ultron locations supervisor talks Johannesburg

    29 April 2015

Jamie Lengyel, Supervising Location Manager on Age of Ultron. had nothing but praise for Johannesburg after filming a major action sequence there for Avengers – Age of Ultron with Moonlighting Films last year.

He was interviewed for The Location Guide along with Exec Producer Jeremy Latcham:

“The ambition from the start was to go global, with a broader visual canvas that could take the franchise to new markets,” explains Jamie Lengyel, Supervising Location Manager on Age of Ultron. Marvel chose Johannesburg in South Africa as the filming location for a key action sequence where Iron Man is tasked with subduing The Hulk. Moonlighting Films assisted the shoot locally.

“Johannesburg is a melting pot of African culture and is very interesting visually,” Lengyel observes: “It has a great skyline, which was important as we were planning lots of aerial shots. The local authorities were very helpful.”

“When you’re bringing a movie of this size, you need a government that’s going be welcoming, co-operative and give you the access to the city that you need,” adds executive producer Jeremy Latcham.

“We looked all over Africa for this sequence and Johannesburg was clearly the place to be,” Latcham continues: “It had the look and access to the streets we needed. It was really film-friendly. In the downtown streets we flew helicopters, crashed cars and exploded massive pyrotechnics. It’s really exciting and nice to find governments that want filmmakers to come and show off their city and that’s what we have done and I think the people of Johannesburg are going to be thrilled to see their city well-represented up on the big screen.”

    The Dinosaur Project

    25 July 2012

New movie The Dinosaur Project, shot with Moonlighting Films and set to be released in UK cinemas August 10th, features previously unseen footage from the ill-fated, eponymous 2011 expedition to the Congo in search of the Mokele Mbembe. Discover a world lost for millions of years.
Studiocanal are delighted to finally bring this astonishing story of the missing Congo expedition to UK audiences, and the findings of the Cryptozoological Society to audiences around the world. The film features stunning recovered footage of creatures thought to be extinct for 65 million years. As the search for the missing crew continues, questions remain about the source of the missing footage and the manner in which it was discovered. Producer Nick Hill said in a statement, “It has been incredible to have the original source material to work with, and we have great respect and admiration for the work of the Cryptozoological Society and are keen to support them in their search. The movie raises important questions about species which conventional science tells us have long since become extinct, and we hope it will help raise awareness of the search to locate the missing persons and the BCZS’s ongoing work in the Congo. http://uk.ign.com/articles/2012/07/11/the-dinosaur-project-trailer
