About THREAD

Moonlighting Digital became THREAD in 2014. A stand-alone team within Moonlighting that facilitates and / or develops and produces digital content and services.

People engage with content differently these days. Our attention spans are shorter, our time is limited, the number of ways content can reach us is infinite and we can aggressively control what we engage with. What THREAD does is create and programme relevant content for brands and makes sure that it reaches and engages with the target audience. That’s it in a nutshell.

Discovery and Google’s new VR series with LA’s Here be Dragons

20 December 2017

LA’s Here Be Dragons, with director Addison O’Dea, came to Cape Town to shoot episodes of Discovery and Google’s ground-breaking VR series “Discovery TRVLR” which takes viewers directly into the lives of fascinating locals in every corner of the globe through a 360 degree storytelling experience. In South Africa, after extensive research, we focused on 4 unique locals including Christie, a young Sangoma who gave us unprecedented access to her initiation ceremony, and Bradley, one of the last surviving members of the ancient Bushmen tribe. https://www.discoveryvr.com(To view, you will need a browser that supports playback of 360° videos).

Toyota’s epic, 5-country “Mobility for All” shot by John Hillcoat and Serial Pictures for Saatchi & Saatchi.

27 November 2017

John Hillcoat and Serial Pictures’ beautiful epic “Mobility for All” spot for Toyota and Saatchi & Saatchi kicked off Toyota’s global Olympics sponsorship. The ad spotlights 100 people in every stage of life, showing one for each age from 1 to 100 years old. It was shot in 5 countries: South Africa (with Moonlighting), Canada, Czech Republic, Thailand and Japan. In South Africa we cast 32 roles, including a Nigerian Paralympic power-lifter, a 97 year old woman and a 99 year old man from Johannesburg, a 75 year old dance teacher and the cool 70 year old surfer in the picture. This was a really incredible production to be part of.

The Dark Tower – shot in South Africa with Moonlighting Films

8 September 2017

The Dark Tower, starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey and directrd by Nikolaj Arcel was shot in South Africa with Moonlighting Films.

Click here to read Daniel Derckson’s article “South Africa helps to bring Stephen King’s The Dark Tower to life” by Daniel Derckson.

Here are some highlights –

When filmmakers searched for locations to shoot the highly anticipated film of Stephen King’s celebrated The Dark Tower book series, they found a perfect home in South Africa which “offered unique landscapes and awe-inspiring forests for the alternate dimension. The production took the company to such remote places as the barren Karoo desert, where they built the Mid-World sets. To add a further layer of a parallel universe, the company moved to the Cedarburg mountain range, where the protected nature reserve features dramatic caves and characteristic red rocks.”
“Mid-World is a sort of a wasteland, yet not quite,” says Glass. “There are a lot of remnants of an ancient civilization that are scattered around this place; weirdly, the civilization is a future civilization that has now become ancient.”

“In South Africa, we found otherworldly deserts – it was almost like being on Mars,” Glass continues. “The horizon just kept going; I’ve never seen anything like that before. I think that there’s a romance and a certain sense of adventure that goes into filming in Africa.”

1stAveMachine – Izze Fusions

27 May 2017

US production house 1stAveMachine shot 8 days with us in December for agency TBWA / Chiat / Day’s sumptuous launch campaign for PepsiCo’s Izze Fusions. The shoot comprised 3 different units working with 3 incredible directors – Karim Zariffa, Nico Casavecchia and Tim Brown – who shot simultaneously in studio and on location. Many elements were deliberately whacky or challenged the norm. Credit to Art Director Leon Morland, Wardrobe Stylist Bridget Baker, Gravitron for SFX, our SA production team and crew and our fantastic clients. We were proud to get this feedback from our US Exec Producer – “Every project that comes across my desk I try to figure out how to shoot it in SA with you. It was seriously one of the best production services experiences I’ve had and I shoot all around the world.” You can catch most of the footage at @izzeofficial.
