    Moonlighting Masterchef

    29 August 2015

African Relish Culinary School hosted us once more for our annual Bosberaad, a.k.a Teambuilding, a.k.a Masterchef a.k.a “No I’m not really competitive…” In three oh so short hours we had to light a fire, prepare and cook a poitjie, joint a leg of lamb or a chicken, chop onions in a race, make a relish, bake bread, make sago pudding, make a meringue……….it was messy. Thank you African Relish for a fabulous 48 hours.

    Thread and Sony Xperia Mashlab

    19 August 2015

Moonlighting’s digital company “Thread” are into their 3rd month of running Sony Xperia “Mashlab” on South Africa’s most popular youth radio station 5FM.  Conceived by Thread’s Jon Savage, Mashlab is an online, interactive music “lab” which, each month, produces a new song & music video developed entirely by the fans and performed by their choice of well-known South African artists. (The last Mashlab included bands Seether and The Parlotones.) Fans vote which artist should collaborate via social media; they send song ideas, develop lyrics and design the album. Artists are filmed and footage streamed through the Sony Xperia site culminating in a live concert for all 10 tracks.  True digital integration in one project.  The music video of Mashlab #1’s “Caviar Dreams”, performed by Al Bairre and PHFAT was released by Sony Xperia last week; Mashlab #2’s “Addicted to Scars” is a collaboration of Kwesta and Black Motion; Mashlab #3 ‘s collaboration between David Kramer and Toya Delazy is in production. For more info on this and other digital concepts from Thread, check out www.thread.co.za

Endless River is first SA film to compete at the Venice International Film Festival

    11 August 2015

Great article in Times Live on Endless River – produced by Genevieve Hofmeyr and Marvin Saven of Moonlighting Films and Didier Costet of Swift Productions. The team last collaborated together with Oliver Hermanus on his award winning “Skoonheid”.

Oliver Hermanus’s new film, The Endless River, has bagged two prestigious nominations at the Venice International Film Festival.

The Endless River, shot in the small town of Riviersonderend in the Western Cape, has been nominated for the Golden Lion award. Its lead actress, Crystal Donna Roberts, has been nominated as Best Actress. Hermanus said the invitation to a premiere and nominations for the awards made him feel “pretty good”. “My hope is for the film to be seen by the largest possible audience and to inspire new work by my peers.” Hermanus said he was not sure when the film – shot last year – would be released locally.

For 30-year-old Roberts this is her “first big film role” despite having done theatre. “It’s obviously quite overwhelming. I’m so proud to be part of this,” she said. Roberts plays a small-town waitress alongside French actor Nicolas Duvauchelle, who plays a French expatriate. He forms an unlikely bond with the waitress after the brutal murder of his family on a farm.

The 72nd festival, from September 2 to12, is the world’s oldest film festival.

Hermanus, who also directed the films Skoonheid and Shirley Adams , will compete against 20 other filmmakers.

    Cannes Lions 2015

    30 June 2015

Moonlighting’s Beccy and Shayne spent a hard (yeah right), fantastic week at Cannes Lions. Once again we were part of the GPN base which ran from 11 – 5pm every day, this year at La Mandala Beach Restaurant on the Croisette – great for meetings and a base for clients to chill out and use the WIFI. We had our GPN Summit on the Tuesday – attended by some 30 production service companies from around the world. We went to the Shots Party, The Location Guide Soiree, the P.I.G Films / Tantor Barbequeue, the Lee Films Tapas party, the Geek Films party, dined with many old friends and were proud to sponsor what was hailed as THE party of the week. The South African Party rocked it his year. Pulse Music’s Marc Agranti DJ’d along with guest DJ Juan Woodbury and Boerewors rolls were served at 1am. We we had to close the doors when the guest-count hit 600.

Avengers Age of Ultron locations supervisor talks Johannesburg

    29 April 2015

Jamie Lengyel, Supervising Location Manager on Age of Ultron. had nothing but praise for Johannesburg after filming a major action sequence there for Avengers – Age of Ultron with Moonlighting Films last year.

He was interviewed for The Location Guide along with Exec Producer Jeremy Latcham:

“The ambition from the start was to go global, with a broader visual canvas that could take the franchise to new markets,” explains Jamie Lengyel, Supervising Location Manager on Age of Ultron. Marvel chose Johannesburg in South Africa as the filming location for a key action sequence where Iron Man is tasked with subduing The Hulk. Moonlighting Films assisted the shoot locally.

“Johannesburg is a melting pot of African culture and is very interesting visually,” Lengyel observes: “It has a great skyline, which was important as we were planning lots of aerial shots. The local authorities were very helpful.”

“When you’re bringing a movie of this size, you need a government that’s going be welcoming, co-operative and give you the access to the city that you need,” adds executive producer Jeremy Latcham.

“We looked all over Africa for this sequence and Johannesburg was clearly the place to be,” Latcham continues: “It had the look and access to the streets we needed. It was really film-friendly. In the downtown streets we flew helicopters, crashed cars and exploded massive pyrotechnics. It’s really exciting and nice to find governments that want filmmakers to come and show off their city and that’s what we have done and I think the people of Johannesburg are going to be thrilled to see their city well-represented up on the big screen.”

David Review’s write-up on Paul WS Anderson’s Audi spot “Coup”

    29 April 2015

No one does bombastic nonsense quite like The Mob’s Paul WS Anderson. In this film – for example – it’s pretty obvious that this gang of crooks would be better advised buying the cars they steal as it would certainly be the cheaper option.

But that doesn’t matter one bit… instead of thinking about that, just concentrate on the glorious spectacle of a well-organised heist. Even if the whole point is to demonstrate they’re not going to get away with it because of some elaborate tracking system that allows the police to recover the vehicles.

Anderson is very much the ‘go to guy’ for this kind of action film facsimile and rightly so. There’s something about the way he puts together sequences like this that makes you think the police ought to be interviewing him about the Hatton Garden diamond job. Not that he was involved, of course, but perhaps the cops should be asking him how he WOULD have done it if he was!
