    Of Kings and Prophets

    23 February 2016

Of Kings and Prophets – shot with Moonlighting Films in South Africa – will premier in the US on March 8th.

Published in Business Day: 19 February, 2016

THESE are fire-treated so they can go up in flames, says costume supervisor Stephen O’Rawe. There’s a battle tonight and O’Rawe is in the thick of it. He’s marshalling uniforms for three different tribes so that everything is ready when the 400-odd extras arrive to be dressed. The clothes of the various “soldiers” will catch alight in the midst of the fray — without the actors being crisped.

It’s dusty and hot in the bleached hills outside Durbanville in the Western Cape where the American Broadcasting Corporation Studios’ (ABC’s) television series Of Kings and Prophets is being filmed. It’s the largest ABC production yet to be filmed in SA.

“He came from Game of Thrones,” says costume designer Moira Meyer of O’Rawe. “He says he’s never going back.”

O’Rawe is marching about showing off Philistine masks and leather jerkins. Game of Thrones in some ways marked a new era in television drama: the television spectacular. The Home Box Office (HBO) series has won 26 Primetime Emmy Awards and attracted record numbers of viewers and a broad and active international fan base.

Of Kings and Prophets, which traces the rise of a shepherd, David, to become the Israelites’ most famous king, is ABC’s answer to the rise of these superseries.

Endless River is first SA film to compete at the Venice International Film Festival

    11 August 2015

Great article in Times Live on Endless River – produced by Genevieve Hofmeyr and Marvin Saven of Moonlighting Films and Didier Costet of Swift Productions. The team last collaborated together with Oliver Hermanus on his award winning “Skoonheid”.

Oliver Hermanus’s new film, The Endless River, has bagged two prestigious nominations at the Venice International Film Festival.

The Endless River, shot in the small town of Riviersonderend in the Western Cape, has been nominated for the Golden Lion award. Its lead actress, Crystal Donna Roberts, has been nominated as Best Actress. Hermanus said the invitation to a premiere and nominations for the awards made him feel “pretty good”. “My hope is for the film to be seen by the largest possible audience and to inspire new work by my peers.” Hermanus said he was not sure when the film – shot last year – would be released locally.

For 30-year-old Roberts this is her “first big film role” despite having done theatre. “It’s obviously quite overwhelming. I’m so proud to be part of this,” she said. Roberts plays a small-town waitress alongside French actor Nicolas Duvauchelle, who plays a French expatriate. He forms an unlikely bond with the waitress after the brutal murder of his family on a farm.

The 72nd festival, from September 2 to12, is the world’s oldest film festival.

Hermanus, who also directed the films Skoonheid and Shirley Adams , will compete against 20 other filmmakers.

Avengers Age of Ultron locations supervisor talks Johannesburg

    29 April 2015

Jamie Lengyel, Supervising Location Manager on Age of Ultron. had nothing but praise for Johannesburg after filming a major action sequence there for Avengers – Age of Ultron with Moonlighting Films last year.

He was interviewed for The Location Guide along with Exec Producer Jeremy Latcham:

“The ambition from the start was to go global, with a broader visual canvas that could take the franchise to new markets,” explains Jamie Lengyel, Supervising Location Manager on Age of Ultron. Marvel chose Johannesburg in South Africa as the filming location for a key action sequence where Iron Man is tasked with subduing The Hulk. Moonlighting Films assisted the shoot locally.

“Johannesburg is a melting pot of African culture and is very interesting visually,” Lengyel observes: “It has a great skyline, which was important as we were planning lots of aerial shots. The local authorities were very helpful.”

“When you’re bringing a movie of this size, you need a government that’s going be welcoming, co-operative and give you the access to the city that you need,” adds executive producer Jeremy Latcham.

“We looked all over Africa for this sequence and Johannesburg was clearly the place to be,” Latcham continues: “It had the look and access to the streets we needed. It was really film-friendly. In the downtown streets we flew helicopters, crashed cars and exploded massive pyrotechnics. It’s really exciting and nice to find governments that want filmmakers to come and show off their city and that’s what we have done and I think the people of Johannesburg are going to be thrilled to see their city well-represented up on the big screen.”
