Filming on location in Cape Town – The Location Guide

    12 March 2014

Cape Town has gained a well-earned global reputation amongst producers, directors, cast and film crew as being an extremely film-friendly shooting destination. Cape Town is the second most populous city in South Africa (nearly four million people) after Johannesburg and is the provincial and legislative capital of the Western Cape.

Local location tip: “As most commercial production is concentrated in the six hectic months of summer there is a huge demand on resources, so the longer the pre-production time can be stretched the better, especially when there are a lot of locations involved. – Shayne Brookstein, Producer, (Moonlighting)

The Location Guide on our Windhoek Lager shoot

    13 February 2014

Moonlighting doubled filming locations in Turkey for Africa in a new spot for Windhoek Lager that also involved shooting in Kenya and South Africa. The Journey shows football star Didier Drogba being inspired to dribble a ball across African landscapes on his way to a packed stadium.

Given that the production schedule was largely dictated by Drogba’s availability, Moonlighting travelled to the Ivorian star’sIstanbul base – he plays for Turkish team Galatasary SK – to double parts of the city for African locations. Istanbul’s winter weather conditions were among the larger challenges of this leg of the shoot.

“It was freezing cold and raining which made it difficult!” recalls producer Shayne Brookstein: “There was a below-freezing wind chill and we were shooting on the Black Sea with extras filming in African dress as if it were hot, plus Didier in shorts!”

The spot’s African village, a collection of remote African roads and the finale’s stadium were among the locations found inTurkey. Filming then shifted to Malindi in Kenya, which was used as a practical double for Ghana, before South Africa was used as a stand-in for British locations, while also providing a striking cliff-top scene.

“Our last shoot day in Istanbul was pushed by a day because of Didier’s schedule,” Brookstein comments, “but we could not then push the shoot days in Kenya or South Africa so we effectively lost a day of prep in Kenya.”

“This meant we ended up landing in Kenya at 8am, set out on a recce for eight different locations, arrived at the hotel at 8pm and then the call time was 4am the next morning. But the team in Kenya were amazing and it worked,” Brookstein adds.

New York Times votes Cape Town Number One City to visit 2014

    22 January 2014

    $ – ZAR10.8 ||  € – ZAR – 14.8 || £ – 17.7

These are today’s crazy exchange rates ensuring 20 to 24% more value to production budgets this season. Combine that with the heady news that the New York Times and the UK Guardian just voted Cape Town THE number one place to visit (out of 52) and there can’t be many reasons to keep you away.  Cape Town is a hotspot of international productions this month but amazingly, thanks to Manni, Moonlighting accommodation guru, we have managed to get rooms for our client teams under really demanding circumstances.  NOTE: If you want to book at restaurants The Test Kitchen or Pot Luck Club, I suggest you get us to book in the minute you think you might be coming.  http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/01/10/travel/2014-places-to-go.html?_r=0

Moonsport and 6 months with the Proteas Cricket Team

    21 January 2014

The Castle Lager Proteas Test Team “Road to Number One” documents the journey by the SA cricket team to lead the log by a huge margin.  The South African Cricket board partnered with Moonlighting and some of the greatest cricketers the world has ever seen – Graeme Smith, Gary Kirsten, Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander –  to tell this story.  Released in time for Christmas, the doccie is the result of a 6 months labour of love directed by Liza Key and with production by Emanuel Ferreira.  It is also the first production from Moonsport – a division of Moonlighting that is providing digital sports content resulting from strong player relationships the company has nurtured through the years.  The company capitalizes on having serviced the sports industry in many disciplines since inception.

Windhoek Lager with Didier Drogba in Turkey, Kenya & South Africa

    15 January 2014

Unusual for Moonlighting, the brief came from South African agency Jupiter Drawing Room; the requirement – an international director used to working with sports stars. A few weeks and a lot of flights later, the result was this spine tingling spot with Ivorian soccer star Didier Drogba that aired on December 19th.  Directed by US-based Matt Bieler, this was a very cool international collaboration.  Moonlighting’s Head of Production Shayne Brookstein produced, taking her team (Bieler, Japanese award-winning DP Masa Takayanagi and Australian AD Ian Astridge) to Turkey, Kenya and back to South Africa in 2 short weeks. Shot for the African market, the commercial celebrates the story of a beer from Africa that has grown to be loved and celebrated worldwide and draws comparison with a man who has followed a similar journey. Drogba is seen journeying across African landscapes and rough terrain before arriving at a soccer stadium to claim victory. Big congratulations to the team!
