Filming on location in Cape Town – The Location Guide

    12 March 2014

Cape Town has gained a well-earned global reputation amongst producers, directors, cast and film crew as being an extremely film-friendly shooting destination. Cape Town is the second most populous city in South Africa (nearly four million people) after Johannesburg and is the provincial and legislative capital of the Western Cape.

Local location tip: “As most commercial production is concentrated in the six hectic months of summer there is a huge demand on resources, so the longer the pre-production time can be stretched the better, especially when there are a lot of locations involved. – Shayne Brookstein, Producer, (Moonlighting)

    Moonlighting

    and thats a wrap

    6 March 2014

This was on day 4 of an epic shoot that made me proud to be part of this industry. What a team! We had art department creating set builds of amphitheatres, houses, rodeos and creating a carnival complete with float, giant grasshoppers, flamingos, elephants. We had wardrobe producing costume after costume, sometimes as a last minute change. We battled unseasonal gale force winds and still managed the helicopter shot. All at Cape Town’s busiest time of year. I can’t even name the brand or the team yet but I will so shout it out there once this one’s flighted. #CapeTownfilmindustryrocks.

The Location Guide on our Windhoek Lager shoot

    13 February 2014

Moonlighting doubled filming locations in Turkey for Africa in a new spot for Windhoek Lager that also involved shooting in Kenya and South Africa. The Journey shows football star Didier Drogba being inspired to dribble a ball across African landscapes on his way to a packed stadium.

Given that the production schedule was largely dictated by Drogba’s availability, Moonlighting travelled to the Ivorian star’sIstanbul base – he plays for Turkish team Galatasary SK – to double parts of the city for African locations. Istanbul’s winter weather conditions were among the larger challenges of this leg of the shoot.

“It was freezing cold and raining which made it difficult!” recalls producer Shayne Brookstein: “There was a below-freezing wind chill and we were shooting on the Black Sea with extras filming in African dress as if it were hot, plus Didier in shorts!”

The spot’s African village, a collection of remote African roads and the finale’s stadium were among the locations found inTurkey. Filming then shifted to Malindi in Kenya, which was used as a practical double for Ghana, before South Africa was used as a stand-in for British locations, while also providing a striking cliff-top scene.

“Our last shoot day in Istanbul was pushed by a day because of Didier’s schedule,” Brookstein comments, “but we could not then push the shoot days in Kenya or South Africa so we effectively lost a day of prep in Kenya.”

“This meant we ended up landing in Kenya at 8am, set out on a recce for eight different locations, arrived at the hotel at 8pm and then the call time was 4am the next morning. But the team in Kenya were amazing and it worked,” Brookstein adds.

New York Times votes Cape Town Number One City to visit 2014

    22 January 2014

    $ – ZAR10.8 ||  € – ZAR – 14.8 || £ – 17.7

These are today’s crazy exchange rates ensuring 20 to 24% more value to production budgets this season. Combine that with the heady news that the New York Times and the UK Guardian just voted Cape Town THE number one place to visit (out of 52) and there can’t be many reasons to keep you away.  Cape Town is a hotspot of international productions this month but amazingly, thanks to Manni, Moonlighting accommodation guru, we have managed to get rooms for our client teams under really demanding circumstances.  NOTE: If you want to book at restaurants The Test Kitchen or Pot Luck Club, I suggest you get us to book in the minute you think you might be coming.  http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/01/10/travel/2014-places-to-go.html?_r=0

Moonsport and 6 months with the Proteas Cricket Team

    21 January 2014

The Castle Lager Proteas Test Team “Road to Number One” documents the journey by the SA cricket team to lead the log by a huge margin.  The South African Cricket board partnered with Moonlighting and some of the greatest cricketers the world has ever seen – Graeme Smith, Gary Kirsten, Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander –  to tell this story.  Released in time for Christmas, the doccie is the result of a 6 months labour of love directed by Liza Key and with production by Emanuel Ferreira.  It is also the first production from Moonsport – a division of Moonlighting that is providing digital sports content resulting from strong player relationships the company has nurtured through the years.  The company capitalizes on having serviced the sports industry in many disciplines since inception.

Windhoek Lager with Didier Drogba in Turkey, Kenya & South Africa

    15 January 2014

Unusual for Moonlighting, the brief came from South African agency Jupiter Drawing Room; the requirement – an international director used to working with sports stars. A few weeks and a lot of flights later, the result was this spine tingling spot with Ivorian soccer star Didier Drogba that aired on December 19th.  Directed by US-based Matt Bieler, this was a very cool international collaboration.  Moonlighting’s Head of Production Shayne Brookstein produced, taking her team (Bieler, Japanese award-winning DP Masa Takayanagi and Australian AD Ian Astridge) to Turkey, Kenya and back to South Africa in 2 short weeks. Shot for the African market, the commercial celebrates the story of a beer from Africa that has grown to be loved and celebrated worldwide and draws comparison with a man who has followed a similar journey. Drogba is seen journeying across African landscapes and rough terrain before arriving at a soccer stadium to claim victory. Big congratulations to the team!

    Credits

Director Matt Bieler, Producer Shayne Brookstein, Agency Jupiter Drawing Room, Exec Producer Philip Key, DP Masa Takayanagi, AD Ian Astridge, Creative Director Jonathan Beggs, Creative Group Head Andrew Lang, TV producer Lauren Trevelyan.

Shooting with Cape Town’s new Bolt Motion Control Rig

    30 October 2013

There was real “boys and their toys” excitement when we got to shoot with The Bolt on our recent shoot for Norway’s Plastikk. The Bolt was developed by Marc Roberts Motion Control in London and is now based in Cape Town. It is THE benchmark in high speed motion control and allows you to track movement of objects in freefall. Partner company Grinder Films has been doing test shots with the Bolt for the last month – the results (which will be online soon) show that The Bolt is also bringing game-changing opportunities to the world of food and beverage cinematography.

6 tips and tricks to survive being a Bidder.

    30 October 2013

To all you producers out there who are constantly working budgets, revising budgets, bidding with 5 different countries and time-zones at the same time….…we hear you! Here’s our Bidding Producer Carl’s take on it!
Bidder = diplomat, juggler, optimist (eternal), stoic (when you lose that bid after the 55th budget version, you need to be one, trust me), owner of 10 hands / assistants would be good (to man the landline, the mobile, the skype, email, the 5 suppliers on hold, and vital – MAKE THE COFFEE). Read more…..
    1. Social life? Who needs one? When asked for 20 different versions of the budget within 1 hour, at 6pm on Friday, the answer is always, “No problem”.
    2. When asked to add all the bells and whistles but still keep the price exactly the same, or less, the answer is always, “No problem”.
    3. INSOMNIA Sleep is a luxury reserved for the winter(off-season) months.
    4. TIME TRAVEL This is a pretty standard requirement in the world of Bidding. Get brief today, need quote yesterday.
    5. Set up 4 x screens, 3 x phones, laptop, tablet, double espresso and you’re ready to roll!
    6. COFFEE and CAKE: Coffee on the dot first thing, mid-morning, mid afternoon – preferably made for you JUST how you like it. And CAKE. Friday afternoon. Non negotiable.

South Africa Picks ‘Four Corners’ for Oscar

    21 September 2013

    Variety – 20 September 2013

South Africa has selected child-gang thriller “Four Corners” as its contender for the foreign-language Academy Award race.

Directed by Ian Gabriel, “Four Corners” revolves around a 13-year-old chess whiz drawn into the Cape Town’s well-known child-gang culture. Touted as the first film to delve into the 100-year-old war between South Africa’s so-called Number gangs, the 26 and the 28, it blends the Sabela, Tsotsi-taal and Cape Afrikaans dialects and mixes established talents with non-actors and first-time thesps from schools and communities across the Cape Flats.

“Four Corners” is South African prison slang for the four corners of a prison cell.

Pic is produced by Genevieve Hofmeyr (Moonlighting Films) and Cindy Gabriel (Giant Films), and partly funded by the National Film & Video Foundation South Africa, the Berlinale Co-Production Market and New York’s IFP No Borders.

Ian Gabriel’s previous work “Forgiveness,” influenced by the post-apartheid Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings, screened at the Locarno fest in 2004.

The last date to submit entries for the foreign-language Academy Awards is Oct. 1. Nominations will be announced Jan. 16 and the ceremony will be held March 2 at the Dolby Theater.

We loved working with Oslo’s Tangrystan again who came with director Jakob Strom to shoot in Salt River Studio where art director Mark Auret created a Norwegian hospital set build for their Insurance ad. And we met Oslo’s Plastikk for the first time who came over to shoot Komplett on 2 perfect days in Constantia.

Toronto’s Sons and Daughters shoot Kobo

    5 August 2013

Kobo was the third shoot that Toronto’s Sons and Daughters brought to shoot with us in Cape Town this season. First came Era with director Peter Martin, followed by Yellow Pages directed by UK director Barney Cokeliss. Kobo was a worthy grand finale: a 4 day epic directed by Mark Zibert and produced by Liane Thomas and Andrew Sulliman. We closed off a downtown Cape Town street on a busy Saturday night and created a carnival scene complete with dancers, fire eaters, men on stilts and giant grasshoppers; we took over Cape Town stadium for a morning and did a Mexican wave with hundreds of extras; we staged a bank robbery in a downtown bank (which was a little too realistic for some of the bystanders) and we shot our beach scene on THE perfect day on Camps Bay beach. It was one of the shoots you get excited about when the bid comes in. Thank you Sons and Daughters.

Bat Suit base-jumping for Rexona’s digital viral

    7 February 2013

Extreme sports heroes, base-jumpers JT Holmes and Espen Fadnes (Wingsuit World Champion 2010) flew off the mountain at Banghoek in Jonkershoek Nature Reserve in December  for the latest viral campaign for Unilever’s Rexona. Working with agency R/GA, Ranch Exit Media, ex-Moonlightinger Richard Moerdyk’s Fixerfilm, Leander Lacey from Stunt Network and a great crew, we had the shoot day of our lives! The logistics of the shoot meant we had a very small crew; environmental concerns required minimal contact with the mountain surface; and the script included a set-build in the saddle of a remote mountain pass. Richard’s “nothing can stop us” attitude overcame all these challenges.  “We literally dropped the “set” in, and removed it, by helicopter” he recalls drily. “Weather conditions were perfect and I was privileged to work with an incredible team of experts.”
