Toronto’s Sons and Daughters shoot Kobo

    5 August 2013

Kobo was the third shoot that Toronto’s Sons and Daughters brought to shoot with us in Cape Town this season. First came Era with director Peter Martin, followed by Yellow Pages directed by UK director Barney Cokeliss. Kobo was a worthy grand finale: a 4 day epic directed by Mark Zibert and produced by Liane Thomas and Andrew Sulliman. We closed off a downtown Cape Town street on a busy Saturday night and created a carnival scene complete with dancers, fire eaters, men on stilts and giant grasshoppers; we took over Cape Town stadium for a morning and did a Mexican wave with hundreds of extras; we staged a bank robbery in a downtown bank (which was a little too realistic for some of the bystanders) and we shot our beach scene on THE perfect day on Camps Bay beach. It was one of the shoots you get excited about when the bid comes in. Thank you Sons and Daughters.

    Guest Celebrity Chef

    18 March 2013

Producer Lawrence Goodman swapped his producer’s cap (well, he would have if he wore a cap!) for a chef’s hat last week when he was here line-producing a Sons & Daughter’s project with us. Multi-tasking as he took calls on his mobile while stirring the pot …. and abley assisted by sous-chefs Victoria, Monica and Simba,  Lawrence fed the Moonlighting Films and Commercials teams with the most delicious lamb curry.

    Agustin Alberdi’s Gancia

    7 February 2013

Award winning director Agustin Alberdi came out to Cape Town with Landia Buenos Aries to shoot this Gancia spot with us. We love it. Look for sneaky lover zip-sliding out of a Camps Bay villa bedroom to escape irate husband; explosions at Rhodes Memorial; the ever-stunning drive along the ocean in a convertible and some great café / club scenes.

Bat Suit base-jumping for Rexona’s digital viral

    7 February 2013

Extreme sports heroes, base-jumpers JT Holmes and Espen Fadnes (Wingsuit World Champion 2010) flew off the mountain at Banghoek in Jonkershoek Nature Reserve in December  for the latest viral campaign for Unilever’s Rexona. Working with agency R/GA, Ranch Exit Media, ex-Moonlightinger Richard Moerdyk’s Fixerfilm, Leander Lacey from Stunt Network and a great crew, we had the shoot day of our lives! The logistics of the shoot meant we had a very small crew; environmental concerns required minimal contact with the mountain surface; and the script included a set-build in the saddle of a remote mountain pass. Richard’s “nothing can stop us” attitude overcame all these challenges.  “We literally dropped the “set” in, and removed it, by helicopter” he recalls drily. “Weather conditions were perfect and I was privileged to work with an incredible team of experts.”

10 days: 9 tvc’s for the Black Arts Company

    7 February 2013

UK agency The Black Arts Company spent most of November with us to shoot commercials for their TTI Floorcare campaign for iconic brand Hoover Vax and Dirt Devil for the UK and USA. Directors Ian Cassie & Richard Ward, stills director Jaiman Harji and producers Nina van Heerden and Kevin Giblin shot 9 scripts simultaneously over the 10 days. We were also privileged to assist The Black Arts Company with their film to promote the charity “Give us Time” while they were here. The charity asks people to donate the use of their holiday homes so that troops returning from Afghanistan can spend time with their families.  The South Africa portion was directed by Ian Cassie with photography by Paul Bond. Crew and suppliers gave their time freely for the extra shoot day and Moonlighting made a beach house in Pringle Bay available for both the shoot and for a soldier family to use in the future.  Thanks to all involved for their huge generosity, including Priest Cape Town, Panavision SA and Panalux SA.

    Who’s Who

    7 February 2013

We have been lucky to work with some inspirational directors so far this season. We’ve mentioned Agustin Alberdi, Ian Cassie, Richard Ward and Chris Patterson. Jean Pierre Philippot just shot his second commercial of the season with us with French production company Tempesta; Jerker Joseffson from Stockholm’s FilmByUs wrapped Dressmann with us last month and is back again now. Scott Lyon was here in October shooting Dove. Anders Rune was here last weekend; Ralph Loop was here before Christmas on an underwater adventure and JJ Keith just wrapped, working with legendary DoP John de Borman.

    Filming at the Aquarium

    8 January 2013

More of this one to come later. We can just say that we filmed at the Aquarium early December; that the resident sharks were most accommodating; that the turtle was very inquisitive; and we ended up filming sunset at Llandudno Beach – doesn’t get much better than that!

    Winter holidays?

    3 October 2012

We spent our winter months happily on set, working around Cape Town’s rain with studios, Joburg shoots and luck! Projects ranged from small to big and included: filming elephants (always such a privilege) up at Brookers Farm for Fifty-Seven GmbH; working with 18 babies in studio for 3 days; filming interviews for Canada; and one of those dream shoots up at Atlantis Dunes with  4 x 4’s + galloping stallions + stunning model + helicopter + sunny days (phew) + great clients = a lot of fun. Thanks Frans Marais for stunning behind the scenes pic. Meanwhile, Grinder’s Tabletop director Rob Payton was in Poland shooting for Knorr; in Moscow shooting for Prodo and then in Bangkok for National Foods.

NCIS’s Daniella Ruah and Underwater Time-Slice

    3 October 2012

This is the commercial we shot with Portugal’s Krypton Films (Media & Advertising’s Best Production Company of the Year) for Agua das Pedras, with NCIS actress Daniella Ruah.  South Africa was one of the only countries in the world that said underwater time-slice could be done within the budget. Shooting with a Phantom and 28 Canon 600d’s, Director Augusto Fraga got his stunning underwater shots of the NCIS actress  in a specialised diving tank at the Simonstown naval base where the water is the clearest you will find in the country. Special thanks to: time-slice technician Jono O’Connel and Frog Squad’s Jason Martin.

Bosberaad 2012. aka “Humiliation by paintball”

    25 July 2012

So er probably a good thing none of us ever joined the military – not sure the country would be so safe…. (well aside from “don’t mess with me Nadia”).

“Let’s go on a team-building fun weekend” they said. 48 hours later, we’d eaten and drunk for the country, talked very quickly about work and then spent hours running around fields in the rain paint-balling each other. Very satisfying! And very good fun.

Carl and Anton were both convinced they should have replaced Daniel Craig as James Bond, Nolan tried very hard to make the accounts department look scary. And Shayne struck a worryingly good commando pose…

    The Dinosaur Project

    25 July 2012

New movie The Dinosaur Project, shot with Moonlighting Films and set to be released in UK cinemas August 10th, features previously unseen footage from the ill-fated, eponymous 2011 expedition to the Congo in search of the Mokele Mbembe. Discover a world lost for millions of years.
Studiocanal are delighted to finally bring this astonishing story of the missing Congo expedition to UK audiences, and the findings of the Cryptozoological Society to audiences around the world. The film features stunning recovered footage of creatures thought to be extinct for 65 million years. As the search for the missing crew continues, questions remain about the source of the missing footage and the manner in which it was discovered. Producer Nick Hill said in a statement, “It has been incredible to have the original source material to work with, and we have great respect and admiration for the work of the Cryptozoological Society and are keen to support them in their search. The movie raises important questions about species which conventional science tells us have long since become extinct, and we hope it will help raise awareness of the search to locate the missing persons and the BCZS’s ongoing work in the Congo. http://uk.ign.com/articles/2012/07/11/the-dinosaur-project-trailer

Harry Patramanis’ Fynbos flourishes in Durban

    19 July 2012

Long-time friends and clients Harry Patramanis and Eleni Asvesta will compete at this years’ 33rd annual Durban International Film Festival with their debut feature film, Fynbos.

Set in contemporary South Africa, Fynbos is a mystery drama about a real estate developer on the verge of bankruptcy. In a last ditch effort to preserve the life he knows, he travels to a lavish and remote property in order to secure a prospective business deal. The feature stars an all-South African cast including Warrick Grier (award winning South African actor and a Fleur du Cap winner for Open Couple), Jessica Hains (Disgrace, The Bang Bang Club) and multiple award winning-actress Susan Danford (Invictus, Catch a fire, 7de Laan).

“With Fynbos I set out to make a film that was an exercise in minimalism. Not as an artistic end, but as a way of allowing seemingly specific things to happen in the film to remain open to multiple interpretations.” says Director Harry Patranamis. “Eleni and I have been coming to South Africa for twenty years. We feel connected to this part of the world.”

Fynbos has been nominated for all major award categories including best film, best direction, best screenplay as well as best leading actors. The film makes its premiere on Sunday 22nd of July at 7pm at Suncoast Cinema. For a sneak peak, take a look at http://afourletterword.net/trailer.html

Sears, Dressman, Ellos shoot for multi-media platforms

    5 July 2012

New York’s Sandwick Films came to shoot their Sears campaign with us this February with director Matthäus Bussmann. Sears usually shoot in the Czech Republic so this was a first for them and us.  Being able to offer Cape Town Films Studios was a key deal-maker here with competitive rates for their world class facility. We used one studio for the tv shoot against green screen and next door’s stage for the stills shoot with photographer Dane Tashima.  Our great Dressman friends  were back with us for the 4th time in 4 years shooting  with the Film By Us team Jerker Joseffson and Gustav Olden who then returned after Christmas to shoot tvc, stills and digital footage for Ellos with Brazilian model Fabiana Semprebom.  We are now frequently incorporating multiple cine and photographic camera formats into one production, as well as negotiating with talent agencies to secure distribution across multiple media platforms.

    Home away from home

    5 July 2012

Where you lay your production-filled head at night on away-shoots is crucial to your overall experience. We get that and want to make sure we take away as many of the ouches as possible. Our production rates at many of Cape Town’s 4 and 5 star hotels are super competitive and, thanks to Manni’s persuasive way, our success rate in negotiating early breakfasts and early check in / late check out is pretty good, with phenomenal support from production friendly hotels such as The Mount Nelson, The Pepper Club, The Hippoboutique and The Taj.  Manni is also the local knowledge for restaurant recommendations, day safari’s, shark cage diving, hiking and many more of the things you can do here when you’re not working. He’s even been known to organise weddings and anniversaries…. For ideas or more info you can email Manni at emanuel@moonlighting.co.za
