    Servicing the Digital World

    11 July 2011

“Why is it that no production service companies seem to talk about servicing digital media jobs?” asked a German producer friend. So we’re talking! Loud. Because our last 2 seasons have seen the world of commercial making evolve to incorporate multiple digital platforms. It’s required a different approach to service and we’ve been learning a lot.

For some projects, it’s meant integrating the world of moving and still images across all media applications from TV to phone to tablet; working with multiple camera platforms across the specific requirements of each media; thinking big and small at the same time and working within each media type’s budget. We’ve also negotiated highly competitive multi-media talent contracts which have benefitted the most from economies of scale. (For Dressman and Ellos for Sweden’s Hobby Films, we shot for TV, internet and stills; for Jacobs for Ireland’s Fish Films we also shot online banners and an online campaign music video.) This month Moonlighting worked with Joel Satore from National Geographic to assist in compiling a library of images once again for multiple media platforms.

For others, like Telia for Stockholm’s It’s Showtime, it’s been fine-tuning our expertise to quote and produce projects purely for online use which in reality has meant making much smaller budgets work without compromising the final product. Telia was a 3 day shoot with a small crew, great vibe and gorgeous results.

Having the Grinder Films Studio right on our doorstep has really helped too for both convenience and economy, whether it’s been for product shots or shooting the artists against a blue screen.

    Moonlighting takes over Prince Albert

    27 May 2011

Take a bunch of Moonlightingers (including Sylvie all the way from Chile), some bicycles (…yup – it was a little scary but only 1 casualty), a lot of delicious food and wine, a little bit of work, some ghosts and mix well in the Karoo town of Prince Albert. Result – our annual Bosberaad and a lot of laughs.

    Tony Kaye, Jean-Pierre Philippot, Traktor

    28 March 2011

We have been privileged to work with (and learn from) some phenomenal directing, cinematography, agency & producing talent this season. Amongst others, director Tony Kaye (American History X) was in Cape Town with us for USA’s Supply & Demand, as was Tempesta’s Jean Pierre Philippot (acclaimed for his work for L’Oreal, Garnier, Vichy), Nicolas Caicoya, here with Milan’s Alto Verbano, and cinematographer John Perez (music videos for Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Eminem, JayZ, Alicia Keays..) who was here to shoot Jacobs with Chris Cottam for Fish Films and O & M, Dublin. Moonlighting Chile heralded some great feedback from GDT (Believe Media) last month and will be soon be welcoming Traktor.

    Behind the Scenes – Jacobs

    18 March 2011

Chris Cottam’s gorgeous, sizzling, all singing, all dancing extravaganza in pink for Jacobs biscuits – for Fish Films and Ogilvy and Mather Ireland – had our art department positively salivating and they excelled themselves with a tight budget and 5 days prep.

    Shooting in Cape Town Stadium

    23 February 2011

We shot inside Cape Town stadium with full floodlights last week just before the U2 concert took it over for a few weeks; it’s hard not to get excited when the lights come on and you have the whole, magnificent stadium to yourself. Cape Town is the perfect “international” stadium; it’s available for shoots subject to schedule and rates can be reasonable under the management of the City of Cape Town. For full information on rates for floodlights, half a pitch and general access by the hour, please contact shayne@moonlighting.co.za. If only tighter shots are required, Cape Town has a few other good stadium options like Athlone and Bellville. Outside of Cape Town, all other city and world cup stadiums are available for shoots

Servicing all media platforms at once = economy of scale

    23 February 2011

Philip writes – As a production service company, we’re able to observe production trends across a wide range of clients, countries and markets. What’s really standing out at the moment is the trend of companies having to cross media platforms in the production environment. Working on a clothing account for Hobby Films, Sweden, Moonlighting provided the platform to record both moving and still images for a TV commercial, magazine advertising, catalogue, the internet and digital media distribution. Details like casting size requirements that accommodate the specific aspect ratios of internet banners are increasingly important. We were able to negotiate talent deals across all these media types in one package making usages affordable. We’re exploring ways to add more value as these requirements grow.

    Finding Gold in Johannesburg

    7 December 2010

Our clients are loving Johannesburg locations right now. With its impressive city infrastructure changes, it’s almost like having a new location to offer. Not to mention the downtown city lock-off’s. Moonlighting recently cordoned off 3 city blocks for 4 days for a car shoot. In addition to stunning city streets & backdrops, we’ve shot in uber-cool loft apartments, high end shopping malls, museums, art galleries, pastoral farms, open savannah and with wild animals. Crime concerns are being put aside as filmmakers have been sharing the wonderful aspects of this vibrant city alongside its 11 million odd inhabitants. Worth noting that Joburg is a year round production destination (as opposed to Cape Town’s intense 6 months) so crew availability is constant. No matter how many times you’ve been to Cape Town, it’s only when you venture North that you start experiencing the real Africa. Clients who’ve recently shot in Gauteng include Lankford Films, Gap Films and Outsider. For a comprehensive selection of recent Joburg location shots, please contact shayne@moonlighting.co.za
