On Saturday, our sports division – Moonsport – started production on ”Round the World in 80 Days” – following cyclist and adventurer Mark Beaumont, live, on his epic journey as he cycles 240 miles / 16 hours each day. Beaumont is preceding his July start with a “test-run”, cycling 3500 miles around Great Britain over 14 days. Cape Town based cameraman Helmut Scherz and editor/stills photographer Johnny Swanepoel will be on the road with Mark and his support team for the same relentless 16 cycling hours every day. Daily uploads will illustrate his progress and tell the story. Moonsport’s Trent Key and Manni Ferreira will be steering the production over the next 5 months. You can follow Mark’s progress on www.artemisworldcycle.com on Twitter at @MrMarkBeaumont #AroundBritain #80Days.
Hungry Man’s Dave Laden shot Mekanism’s World of Tanks campaign with us over 2 days in Cape Town. Noordhoek Common swapped its usual occupants (local dog-walkers) for the star of these Super Bowl featured ads – the legendary Sherman World War II Tank (circa 1940). Driven down from Bloemfontein’s military war museum on a flatbed, our hero was skilfully driven by a South African army tank commander, destroying 4 immaculate set-builds, with 2 resets for each. We had to do regular “sweeps” of the surrounding bushes, uncovering numerous locals hiding to watch!
We are incredibly proud to be involved in the landmark circular economy project “The Virtuous Circle” , that has been launched in South Africa to tackle the challenges of childhood nutrition, food packaging waste and education about sustainable waste management . 2 weeks ago we shot an educational video for the project with South Africa’s own legend Tresor that shows delivery of Futurelife Twin pouches to schoolchildren as well as the first wave of Wildlands Green Desks that are created entirely from recycled, flexible packaging.
The Virtuous Circle is co-ordinated by DuPont in close collaboration with Futurelife®, EqualTrade4, Amcor, Wildlands, RWPA and Wastebuster among others. @3PillarsZA Wastebuster Intergalactic
A few behind-the-scenes from the best few days shooting with multi-award winning and platinum selling Tresor, the legendary Captain Busta, the Khayelitsha Peacemakers & director Carl Houston Mc Millan for the UK’s not-for-profit Wastebuster CIC with Katy Newnham. Huge thanks to Carl Houston McMillan and the amazing crew who gave their time and expertise. And special thanks to the amazing Moonlighting team that includes Chantel, Carl, Jess, Eve & Allan. We’ll show you more when we can.
Moonlighting was incredibly proud to undertake and sponsor the production of the Robben Island Museum’s mobile replica Mandela cell, launched last month at Spine Road High School, Mitchells Plain in the presence of former political prisoners Ahmed Kathrada, Eddie Daniels, Andrew Mlangeni and Dennis Goldberg; Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba and Home Affairs Deputy Minister Fathima Chohan and more than 1200 matric students from surrounding Mitchells Plain High Schools. Huge thanks and respect to the amazing workmanship of Johnny Breedt, Rae Wynne-Roberts, Mustakim Salie, Nic Buchanan, Drew Jarvis & Robert Burger, who designed and created the cell & its trailer (construction, illustration, printing). The cell will be taken around the country by the Robben Island Museum & The Ministry of Home Affairs, to educate children about the country’s past.
European soccer legends Oliver Kahn, Michael Konsel, Geert de Vlieger and Peter Schmeichel bump into each other on a beautiful golf-course, ‘somewhere in France’ and begin their sporting challenge; so begins the new UEFA 2016 campaign directed by Mike Morley and shot with us in Cape Town for Germany’s leading sports betting provider Tipico..
Art Director Naobi Noisette worked alongside model-maker Lee-Ann Heath to design and create 24 massive icons to represent each UEFA qualifying country. For France, for example, they made a poodle and a 3m high frog with baguette and wine (now resident at Moonlighting); for the UK – a red telephone box sofa; for Germany – a 5m “cake” of the Brandenburg Gate; for Croatia – a massive dalmation (now the mascot at a local animal shelter). We worked with prosthetics master Clinton from Cosmesis to create the ageing masks for Kahn and Schmeichel. It was a multi-camera shoot including Steadicams, a Phantom, a Drone and we tried out the Teryx Quad Bike system with Predator arm.
Poor Shayne and Beccy roughed it in Cannes again this year. We were based during the day at the Mandala Beach Restaurant as part of the GPN (Global Production Network) base; thanks to all the clients who came to visit us there and joined us for morning yoga on the beach (!), SUP-ing on our branded GPN boards (! again), breakfasts, drinks, lunch and great chats. We partied at the PIG / Tantor Films BBQ sessions; at the Lee Films pool party; at the Casta Diva apartment; at the SHOTS party; the Location Guide Soiree; and of course co-sponsored the best party of the week – Friday night’s South Africa party at Long Beach. DJ’s Marc Algranti and Juan Woodbury rocked it again. By Sunday 26th it was all over for another year.
Moonlighting’s digital company Thread just shot Laura Mvula’s music video “Phenomenal Woman” with Director Alex Southam and London Alley. We shot in 1 day in Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap, working in 2 -3 minute sessions to allow for no lock-offs and the area’s 5 prayer times. UK stylist Alex Noble (stylist for Lady Gaga) designed costumes and we cast locally with mostly professional dancers.
Yesssssss!!!!! TWO South Africa Music Award nominations for THREAD!!!! One for Army of One (Jack Parow & Freshlyground) and one for Caviar Dreams (Al Bairre & P.H.fat).
I even got a quote from Jon Savage in all the excitement!!! “Thank you Xperia Mashlab on 5FM!This is testament to Sony Xperia’s bravery in creating something unique in the landscape of musical collaboration!”
Thread has produced 9 music videos for Sony xperia Mashlab, working with the above artists as well as David Kramer, Toya DeLazy, Kwesta, Black Motion, Tresor, The Kiffness.
